The painting is of rectangular form and depicts horses beside a river and trees. It is painted in black and gold ink on a gold leaf ground. The painting is framed and glazed.
67cm wide, 110cm high
This is one fold out of what would have originally have been a larger screen consisting of two or more folds. The painting is discoloured with marks to the gold. It has many creases on it. Overall it is in good condition for its age.
The horse in Japan was a symbol of the samurai and of martial power, strength and vitality. In this instance gamboling and frolicking horses are a symbol of free-spirited male youths awaiting the call of duty.
